The Return of Grunge Bathroom: Part 2

Author of Post: Captain Rara

The return of grunge bathroom is hitting  me with a vengeance. The texture for the walls is taking an exceedingly long amount of time. I guess I hadn't really thought it all the way through. I've re-discovered that linking two separate objects through texture is a long process, and making the texture look good is a whole other thing.

I'm at the point in grunge bathroom where I've essentially textured all that I can. Things will get edited, no doubt, but I can finally move on to the next part of the scene. [ A couple of the assets are still being textured by Miss Jolly. ] I'm still looking into options for grungifying the mirror but I'm not exactly sure how to do that. Layered Shader tutorial possibly...?

mmm. grunge.

I was also introduced to both the substance editor in maya as well as Allegorithmic Substance Designer, which are both taking a bit of time to understand. It may have helped, if I knew a bit more about tech art. It's a whole new learning curve, but I'm slowly getting a better understanding of it.

Mmm. Substance Editor

The main thing that remains for grunge bathroom at this point is lighting. Which is going to take a bit. I'll probably end up watching quite a few tutorials.

Edit:

Here's a close up screencap of the trash can texture I created. It's visible in the some of the earlier screencaps but you cans see more of the detail here. Also, after a successful tutorial run, I ended up creating a substance shader for the floor.

And So Life Goes On...

Author of Post: Captain Rara

The Game Developers Conference has come and gone. Nearly 3 months past and with college graduation over, it's a longtime overdue that this blog be updated. While the previous project [Grungy Bathroom] has yet to be completed, it's still on the to-do list of both mine as well as Miss Jolly.

However, it currently isn't a priority as of right now. We both have a variety of other projects in the works and once we find a routine in both our lives we'll have a chance to finally finish grungy bathroom.

The first of five projects I'll be working on is a lighting challenge render from 3D Render.

Texturing and Lighting are going to be the focus of this particular project.

I've started off by just placing base colors and implementing a simple spot light. With the colors in place and the spot light acting as my Key Light, I'll to get an idea what I'd like my shadows to look like and how I want the overall image to feel like. Below is a WIP! So while viewing, keep in mind that this scene is far from done.

Harsh Shadows Galore! <3
On a side note... Holy Crap! That orange has far too many polygons.

=[
I'll keep posting progress updates as I make more progress. Ha! That was repetitive. =p

Till Then!

Deadlines

 Author of Post: Captain Rara

With GDC (Game Developer's Conference) coming up at the end of the month, our goal was the finish this grunge scene before heading to the conference.

While I can model, Miss Jolly is the real modeler of the two of us. In the case of this particular project, Miss Jolly would act as the main modeler (with some outside help, from Lief) and I would act as lighter, rendering  technician, and something of lead for the project. With nearly all the models for the scene having been completed [aside from the lights and the casing around them (which I'm modeling)], we've begun to move onto texturing. It was decided that this part of the project would be split. Miss Jolly had her preference of the models she wants to texture, while I'd take up the remaining models.

With literally about a week away from our deadline for fully textured models, we're starting to feel the pressure.

Texture Deadlines are as follows:

Capt. Rara / Miss Jolly
Plunger = 2/17
Models NEED to be done tomorrow for Light and Light Case = 2/17
Toilet = 2/18
Mirror = 2/18
Stall/ Stall Door = 2/19
Communal Sink = 2/19
Cockroach = 2/20
Trash Can = 2/20
Paper Towel Disp.  = 2/21
Handicap Bar = 2/21
Drain = 2/22
Light and Light Casing Texture = 2/22

Expect an influx of posts in the next week.
